Ontario Chapter braves cold and rain to raise funds for baking students

Beeton, Ont. –  Despite less than ideal temperatures and occasional rain, the Ontario Chapter of the Baking Association of Canada had a great turnout for its annual golf tournament to raise funds to support scholarships for students in baking and pastry programs.

Dedicated BAC members hit the links at The Club at Bond Head near Beeton, Ont., about an hour north of Toronto.

A barbecue lunch started off the day, with hotdog and hamburger buns courtesy Breadsource.

Golfers enjoyed the chance to socialize and enjoy the picturesque course of wooded areas and open vistas despite the fact Mother Nature turned on her sprinkler system from time to time. Fortunately the heavier rain held off until players were inside enjoying dinner.

After the golf, members sat down to a delicious dinner with dinner rolls supplied by Ireks and desserts supplied by Gala Bakery and Baker Street.

Chapter board member and golf tournament organizer Gary Franklin welcomed the industry back to the annual fundraiser.

National board member Derek Mantha reported that national membership is up by approximately 30 per cent, a great achievement. Mantha highlighted BAC activities, welcomed the newest board members including Denise Lee, director of food and nutrition policy, and shared details of a successful Bakery Showcase organized through Annex Business Media. He encouraged members present to spread the word about the many benefits of joining the organization, which represents the interests of bakers in Canada.

Franklin presided over a raffle that saw lucky winners walk away with a barbecue, a mountain bike, a countertop mixer, an air fryer, gift cards and other appealing prizes.

Funds raised through the event will fund scholarships for baking and pastry students.

Franklin thanked Gold sponsors Aromatics & Flavours, Barentz, Caldic and Multivac, and Silver sponsors Malabar Ingredients and Packaging Machinery Concepts for supporting the important event that helps sustain the future of professional baking.
